INEC begins prosecution of electoral offenders Aug 1st, 2013 @ 12:04 am › daily Editor ↓ Skip to comments By Joe Nwankwo Assistant Editor, Abuja Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has directed its legal department to commence the prosecution of electoral offenders involved in multiple registration in the forthcoming Anambra State governorship election scheduled for November 16. The commission said “all the political parties have reviewed their code of conduct, saying “that will go a long way in sanitising the electoral environment. We will keep on reforming the electoral process.” INEC Chairman, Attahiru Jega, disclosed this on Wednesday evening in Abuja during a courtesy call on him by a coalition of youth organisations. Jega ruled out what he described “addendum registration in the 2015 general elections” noting that “we have started it with Anambra election.” His words: “We are going to commence prosecution of offenders who violated voter registration processes. “We have already instructed our legal unit to commence prosecution of electoral offenders in Anambra State with regard to multiple registration during the voter registration exercise.” Jega also blamed the non-prosecution of the people who perpetrated the 2011 post-election violence on security agencies. He said, “What happened was post-election violence, it is within the purview of security agencies. “The violence didn’t take place during election. It’s therefore not within our purview. It’s the responsibility of security agencies. According to him, INEC will soon launch nationwide voter registration “to update what we have before the 2015 election.” He regretted that “politicians who do not mean well for the country have always engaged youths in bad things. “But we have always warned them not to stereotype Nigerian youths to assist them in the propagation of their selfish agenda
