INSIGHT INTO GOREE DIASPORA FESTIVAL 2005 Open the door of the return MOTIVATION: • Attract the attention on the island of Goree is the aim of this 1st edition of “Gorée Diaspora Festival” in the heart of this lively island , worldwide patrimony of the humanity. • Present a positive image , close to fact , close to reality of this land of memories • Open and welcome the Diaspora to the issues of preserving the values of the island • To rouse reflections and questions of pluralism and cultural diversity, to motivate exchange and mutual enrichment between people. • Reuniting competences and energy of the Diaspora for an harmonious and balanced development of the African continent CRITERIA OF IDENTIFICATION Title: Gorée Diaspora festival Date: from November 15th to 20th 2005 Activities: carnaval of memories, music shows, parade, projection, exposition of paint, exposition relating to craft , conference on slavery in a world of an emerging Diaspora, poetry reading, sound and light, African rhythms through out speech and sound sports, lantern, fanal Master of ceremony: Goree Mayor Office Persons in charge of the Organization : Local tourist office of Gorée Local partners: all associations and institutions based on the island Overseas partners: UNESCO , State of Senegal, Countries that have historical links with Goree, national and private companies, potential sponsors INTEREST Cultural A manifestation that will provide as well as artistic , intellectual and eventful animation, generator of expression and communion with brothers and sisters of the Diaspora. Social Incite Africans and the Diaspora to unite around a wild movement of solidarity on questions concerning the island Communicational Strengthen the notoriety and image of Gorée island through out the world Economical Promotion of the Senegal destination, local development and cultural tourism Aims - Allow the black Diaspora to find their lost identity tough, to participate to the African construction and to help preserve the historical site of Gorée - To put out Gorée off this typical image of land of slaves, inspiring feeling of pity, to bring Goree back to a more positive perception open to tolerance, respect of human dignity and promote the intercultural dialogue. - Make the Diaspora to a wild movement of attention, sensibilization and solidarity on the issue of preserving the island its alive community. - Reinforce the relation between Goree and the Diaspora through out the FONDATION GOREE DIASPORA. - Internationalise the memory books of slavery by a plea to set up the network of memorial sites. Thursday, November 17th 2005 • Visit of monuments and touristical sites of Senegal. • Football Match between US Goree and Guyano – Antillese (community of France) match placed under the sign of brotherhood. • Spectacles: Sounds and lights rhythm through out the speech and the sound, Poetry reading, traditional ballets. Friday, November 18th 2005 • Pilgrimage of the guests through different sites and historical monuments of Senegal. • Big cultural board for the reconciliation and the return on the Esplanade of the human rights. Concerts of big artist (national and international). Saturday, November 19th 2005 • Excursion of the Patrimony over the island: to the discovery of vestiges and the historical monuments. • Nautical Olympiad of Commemoration (swimming, regattas, sailing, « palangrotte » fishing, Canoe Kayak, Jet-sky). • Party with Orchestra in the public Garden of Gorée. Sunday, November 2Oth 2005 • Closing of the Festival with the deliverance of the distinction of the Goree pilgrim to participants • Cocktail NB : Several activities are planed next to this program at the same time and in different places on the island (projections – Capoeira dance –poetic meeting- encounters of intellectuals of the Diaspora- Sabar (traditional dance of Senegalese women) –Jazz club
