INSPECTOR OF THE DEAD (the sequel to MURDER AS A FINE ART) continues toward publication. Im about to finish changes to the copyedited version of the manuscript. This is the stage where an editor looks for problems of clarity, repetition, stylistic tics, factual errors, etc. My texts are usually pretty clean, but there are always issues that get by me because, at this point, Im too close. I love copyeditors and am always grateful to them. This is also the last time I can make substantive changes to the text before its locked in, so Im always reluctant to send a copyedited text back. I keep asking myself if theres something more to add or to change. After this, Mulholland will format the text for printing, and at that point, all I can do is check what are called galleys to make sure the changes were made.
