INSPIRED BY a remarkable true story, “Cherokee Word for Water” - TopicsExpress

INSPIRED BY a remarkable true story, “Cherokee Word for Water” tells of one womans quest to bring running water to Cherokee families in rural Oklahoma. Using the traditional concept of “gadugi”—working together to solve a problem—Wilma Mankiller inspired and led a community of volunteers to improve their own living conditions in the face of stiff opposition. She then went on to become the first woman to head a major Native American tribe in the United States. Coinciding with the U.N. Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues on May 12-23, this inspiring film pays tribute to Wilma Mankillers vision, grace and courage and celebrates the strength of the Cherokee community. Please join us and acclaimed author and activist Gloria Steinem for the screening, followed by a conversation with Charlie Soap—the films producer/director and Mankillers husband—as well as other special guests.
