INTERVIEW EXTRA | KEVIN MCHALE, VIRTUALLY FAMOUS | TV CHOICE MAGAZINE He’s best known as wheelchair-user Artie Abrams in the US smash-hit Glee, but now Kevin McHale is turning panel show host, in which he challenges Seann Walsh and Chris Stark to delve into the darkest — and funniest — corners of the internet. He tells TV Choice more… You’re hosting a panel show, which isn’t really a type of programme you get in America, is it? No, but I like it. Initially it was, ‘Why don’t we have this in the States?’ but in the UK you can get away with showing and saying a lot more on TV. This sort of programme would have to be on a paid-for station like HBO or Showtime or something. Was part of the appeal of this the fact you get to work in the UK? It was, but it also kind of came about because I’m a big fan of a lot of shows that have been on E4. So I was kind of making my manager talk to E4. I told him, ‘Erm, if they need anybody, I can get killed off in something. I will do whatever’. I loved their shows like My Mad Fat Diary. And, Skins is on E4, yeah? It is… I was having to watch that, like, in six sections on YouTube illegally. I got all my friends obsessed with it. But, yeah, that show just changed everything for me. One of the fun elements in the programme — which is also packed with famous guests — is the fact you often don’t know who a lot of the UK celebs are, or what our TV programmes are about… I feel like they’re not telling me everything intentionally so when I get out there and they’re like, ‘Have you ever heard of this?’ they can make fun of me. Which is fine. I just hope the guests don’t get offended if I don’t know who they are. How do you get along with Seann Walsh and Chris Stark? I love them. It’s great. We’re all extremely different. I knew Chris kind of by association, because I’m good friends with Scott Mills [who works with Chris at Radio 1]. So I’ve known of him for the past several years, although I’d never met him. Scott introduced us before we started recording and we hit it off. Seann’s great. None of us had ever really done anything like this before, although Seann’s been a guest on a lot of panel shows, but he’s never been a team captain. Chris definitely hasn’t, which is great. The stuff he says is just gold and I don’t know where he comes up with it. But he asks the sort of things the viewer would. Do you spend your time online a lot? Do you have a Facebook account, a Tumblr account, a YouTube account? I don’t have a YouTube account, much to the dismay of some of my friends because they are YouTubers and I’m like, [whispers] ‘I don’t have a YouTube account’. But, yeah, I have a Tumblr, I have a Facebook, I have Twitter, I have Instagram. I like it. I’m on it a lot. Probably more than I should. And if we poked around online, would we find you had a long-abandoned MySpace page or an aging Geocities home page or an old Google+ account that you’ve never updated? Oh, I probably do have a MySpace out there. You shouldn’t go looking for that. I forgot about that one! Uno degli elementi divertenti del programma - che è anche ricco di ospiti illustri - è il fatto spesso non si sa che un sacco di celebrità del Regno Unito sono, o quello che i nostri programmi televisivi sono circa ... Mi sento come se non mi stai dicendo tutto intenzionalmente così quando ottengo là fuori e sono come, Hai mai sentito parlare di questo? Che possono fare gioco di me. Che va bene. Spero solo che gli ospiti non si offendono se non so chi sono. Come si ottiene con Seann Walsh e Chris Stark? Li amo. È ottimo. Siamo tutti estremamente diversi. Sapevo Chris tipo di per associazione, perché sono buoni amici con Scott Mills [che lavora con Chris a Radio 1]. Così ho conosciuto di lui per diversi anni, anche se non avevo mai incontrato. Scott ci ha presentato prima di cominciare la registrazione e ci ha colpito fuori. Seann di grande.
