INTERVIEW WITH SAVANT FOR GLOBAL DANCE FESTIVAL - KC Savant is a Norwegian EDM producer. He is performing at Global Dance Fest, July 19th at the Midland. Savant recently discussed the first dance albums he bought, his favorite producers and early musical influences. For more info on Savant, check out savantofficial Did you come from a musical family? Were your parents musical? My dad was a musician but he didn’t want me to become one. He was very competitive. My father’s disapproval gave me drive. My granddad on my mom’s side had an organ that gave life to me and his VHS tapes of concerts and music videos fueled my creativity. So yeah, I did and they where. What was the first dance album you bought? Ayla -Nirwana ;) Saw it on TV and bought it the week after. First electronic album I ever listened to was Fat of the Land by Prodigy, I started making electronic music after that. Another one was Majik Story of the Fall by Tiesto, first progressive trance I bought. First house album was Daft Punk. Did you start DJing or producing first? … I don’t DJ. I only DJ’d once in my life at a sweet 16 at a Norwegian equivalent of a hillbilly bar. I do this DJ set because that is the way this world works now, but I need to turn this into a live show, a band you know to make something really memorable. What first got you interested in production? I didn’t have a choice. My Aspergers comes in. All I can do is music so production was a default. What was the first track you created as Savant? https://youtube/watch?v=lm_kv_eh7a8 How have your approaches to production changed since you first started out? The more I do, the more I learn the better I get. I am always trying new things even if they fail Who are some of your favorite producers and why? Daft Punk, Quincy Jones, Phil Spector, Hans Zimmer, BT, Max Martin- Dr. Dre, DJ Premier. They all taught me something different and inspired me tremendously, still do. Youre playing the Global Dance Fest in Kansas City this year. What are you most looking forward to about playing Global Dance Fest? It is always amazing to connect with new fans, I have not played in Kansas City yet and this is an amazing way to kick it off! What are your hobbies outside of music? I love doing 3D artwork and I play a lot of games. Do you have a quote or motto that you live by? If you can’t beat them, join them, then kill them in their sleep. What have been the biggest challenges youve had to overcome in your career? Touring has been rough, it’s made me even consider quitting music, but things are getting way better as I figure this all out and have more room for creativity. What advice would you give to producers and DJs just starting out? Never ask for advice. Watch and learn.
