INVICTUS AT TIMMYS tonight a friend told us about a young woman he knows, from Arthurette, that he had once taught, who is fighting for her life tonight in a Moncton hospital. He said her temperature at the time was 40 C and he wondered what that was in Fahrenheit. It took us all of 15 minutes to come up with the right answer - 104 F. She is a mother of three, including a baby, he said. She has been through eight operations, chemo, radiation - the whole bit. Her body is invaded with cancer - but she is surrounded by love. Her mother and her husband are always at her side. Many are not anywhere near so lucky, which at this moment is the only luck she has. It may even be enough - if only to help her let go, which she has fought against all along. We get so caught up in our own little struggles, our difficulties and setbacks and disappointments and pains, that I think we sometimes forget the terrific struggles other people are waging all around us, just beyond the boundaries of our own skin -- in our community, in our beautiful province and country, and all around the world, maybe even in our own families. We ought to pray for her and for all others like her, I think. And we ought to thank God for what we do have.
