Abstract: From flagship stores and themed restaurants to branded neighbourhoods and entertainment districts, brands have become ubiquitous elements of the contemporary urban landscape. They are part of the taken for granted experience of modern life in the metropolis. Yet, what do we know about the specific ways in which brands interface with social and cultural life in the city? This paper focuses on urban branding as a key modality through which brands intersect with urban space and are spun into everyday urban life. It considers some of the key sociological debates regarding the nature and impact of urban brands. Drawing on empirical research conducted in the cities of Winnipeg and Vancouver, the paper then examines how urban brands are implicated in the co-production of urban space, socialities, and cultures. It emphasizes the complex, contradictory, and messy processes through which branded neighbourhoods surface and social and cultural worlds unfold.
