INVITATION TO TENDER FOR DESIGN AND BUILDING OF LANDMARK SCULPTURE AT SANParks HEAD OFFICE MAIN ENTRANCE GROENKLOOF NATIONAL PARK 643 LEYDS STREET, PRETORIA The entrant is to propose a singular, iconic structure intended to be positioned at the SANParks, Groenkloof National Park Main Entrance on Leyds Street in Muckleneuk. The precinct is located on the highest ridge in Pretoria outlining the City bowl to the south. The SANParks Head Office further borders the iconic UNISA Campus to the West. The artist is to distill key threads from the context within the sculpture to stimulate identification and interaction within the direct community. The sculpture should have a presence within the setting and act as a focal point to the Main Entrance of SANParks. It should also encapsulate what SANParks stands for (i.e vision, mission etc.). It is anticipated that the compulsory site briefing session will act as a question and answer session. It is expected that the artist will have spent some time walking and researching the site in advance to the briefing session. ADJUDICATION CRITERIA 1. Capacity of artist to deliver and install project 2. Quality of design concept and interpretation of site 3. Aesthetic appeal of structure 4. Durability and ease of maintenance of materials chosen PLEASE NOTE 1. The competition is open to artist and designers working, studying and/or living in Pretoria 2. All students and individuals (under the age of 30) and groups of up to 3 will be allowed to enter 3. Submissions will not be returned. Please only provide copies of artworks or artwork submissions that will be kept by SanParks 4. No e-mail submissions will be accepted 5. While the submission include supporting material the artwork should speak for itself 6. The adjudication is final and no correspondence will be entered into regarding the decision 7. Artist will need to work closely with SanParks and their supporting staff 8. Due to the limited time available the winning artist will be expected to work closely with all parties involved through all the phases of the process 9. It is understood that all proposed artworks to be submitted are the original creations of the completion entrants. Merit will be given to concepts that are innovative and fresh TIME FRAME SUMMARY 1. Adjudication Top 3 winners will be notified on 13 September 2013 4. Second round proposal submission Friday 4 October 2013 12.00 Groenkloof National Park Reception 5. Announcement of winning submission 11 October 2013 6. Production and Implementation Subject to proposal 7. Final completion Subject to proposal and final arrangements, but no later than 13 December 2013 BID STRUCTURE AND CONTENT First round will include: 1. Full name of Artist(s), ID number(s), contact details 2. A demonstrated understanding of the site in the context of SanParks as well as the surrounding neighborhood (Social, historical and political context). 3. Concept proposal: 3.1 2 Page write-up including a working title, artwork concept referring to the contextual relevance, formal approach, materials to be used, fabrication process and suggested suppliers. 3.2 Basic cost estimate and breakdown of timeframe for the installation process within a two month installation time frame 3.3 Maximum of 3x A4 or A3 drawings, mockups or sketches illustrating the concept and production ideas. 3.4 Maximum of 2x A4 pages of reference material supporting the concept 4. A short CV and biography demonstrating competence or potential in public art production 5. The top 3 entrants will receive notification plus a monetary prize to complete all requirements needed for the second round The second round will include: 1. 3 Dimensional model of the of the proposed sculpture in relation to the site. The model will not be returned to the entrant, and may be displayed at the discretion of SANParks 2. Detailed production and implementation plan with timelines and cash-flow projections 3.
