INVITATION to post about owl conservation This post follows from my post yesterday about what we can do for owls: https://facebook/photo.php?fbid=341628929358162&set=gm.757824670976637&type=1&theater We are all enjoying the many wonderful photos and illustrations; however, if I may steal from the 3-part mission of the organization that I work for (Bird Studies Canada), I hope this group can strive to “UNDERSTAND, APPRECIATE and CONSERVE” owls. We can do this by increasing the amount of information we share in our posts and in our comments—not just on natural history but also on conservation as it pertains to owls. I have a little idea to bring conservation to the fore in 2015: I am posting here a list of 65 owl species that have an IUCN red-list designation. We are recruiting volunteers to do a little private research and then share a post on any one of these species (you dont need to include photos but if you do include material that isnt yours; all we ask is that you source it and give credit to the intellectual property of others) or on conservation topic that pertains to owls. You could try any of the following: i. A link to an owl-related conservation project ii. A link to a summary or results page of an owl monitoring project iii. Information from Birdlife International or other NGO about threats to owls or their habitat iv. Information posts on known dangers to owls such as anticoagulant rodenticides, domestic cats, vehicle collisions, etc. (either specific to your part of the world or more general) v. A thought-provoking post about a controversial topic such as the famous save an owl to shoot an owl proposal from the U.S.A. vi. An essay (or photo essay) about the conservation of any owl species or broader conservation theme that impact owls You may wish to publish these on a blog or personal web site then post a link in this group (always with an appropriate title) or post them directly here. We’d like to keep the focus on conservation (populations, species, ecosystems) rather than rehabilitation (individual animals). To start the ball rolling, I will lead with an example of an extinct species (that I have no photos of obviously). My essay on the Laughing Owl will follow soon in a separate post. You can use this as an example but there is no template nor prescribed format. Be creative, be informative... I hope that many members will take on the challenge of writing a conservation piece for the group. Thank you! The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) list of threatened and near-threatened owl species is below. Note that some owl species will be listed as a threatened species within a country, even if not listed internationally, such as the Burrowing Owls shown here from Manitoba, Canada, where they are listed as Endangered both provincially and federally.
