~IPL Hair removal~ IPL uses a full spectrum. This means IPL releases light over a wide wavelength range. In short, IPL uses intense light pulses instead of laser rays (and coherent verus incoherent light). Both IPL and lasers work in similar ways by sending light into the hair follicles. The energy and light directed from the handpiece is absorbed by the melanin in the hair follicle, momentarily heating it to around 70 degrees centigrade, destroying the ability for the hair follicle to grow hair (the follicle remains functional in other ways). Am I a suitable candidate? Generally, the lighter your skin and the darker your hair, the more suitable candidate you will be. That’s because any melanin (or colour) in the skin will attract the IPL energy first – causing the skin to heat and increase the likelihood of side effects such as blistering (which is also why we do not perform IPL on sun-tanned clients). Having said that, because of our ability to modify the IPL wavelengths, we are able to still work with olive skins safely (although more treatments may be required). We can discuss your specific situation and suitability at a skin consultation. Please be aware however, that IPL will NOT work on red, blonde or grey hairs. Will it permanently get rid of my unwanted hair? IPL can only ever provide permanent hair reduction – and will unlikely remove every single hair on the treated area. For example, the follicle could be too deep and while the hair will most likely become slower and finer, some hairs just wont die!! However, average results show an 80%+ permanent reduction in hair growth. As a guideline you can expect the following: Up to 85% permanent reduction for hormonal areas (e.g. lip or chin). Up to 95% permanent reduction for underarm and bikini areas Up to 80% for other body areas (for example backs, shoulders, legs) Your skin therapist will discuss likely results specific to your skin and hair conditions at your consultation. These will vary from person to person depending on hair density, hair colour, skin colour, stength of the hair and skin pigmentation. How many treatments will I need? It takes more than one or two treatments to achieve maximum hair loss. Each hair has 3 cycles of hair growth that it goes through and it is only the active, Anagen, cycle that will respond to any permanent removal treatment. There is on average, 1/3 of any area that is in that cycle. Hormones, pregnancy, some medications, some medical conditions, genetic influences all affect the growth of hair across the face and body. Because hair growth can be stimulated by these various reasons, we can never guarantee 100% removal, and individual responses may vary. Anywhere from 5 – 10 treatments may be recommended for maximum loss of hair and this can depend on hair colour and thickness, skin colour and area treated. You skin therapist will recommend a course of treatments to help you achieve the maximum results. Any remaining subborn hairs can be treated by waxing, or potentially electrolysis. Will it Hurt? Not really – If you can handle waxing, then IPL is a breeze! As you have probably read elsewhere, each IPL shot can be likened to the flick of a warm rubber band on your skin. The first treatment generally has the most sensation as all the hair targets are there, the skin is not used to the treatment, and you may be feeling a little nervous.
