IRAN - How to understand the current diplomatic and political elasticity of the Islamic Republic? It seems that this month – that will be the month of his first performance as President in headquarter of UN in New York - is the month of “brilliant diplomatic seduction” of the new president of Iran Mr. Rouhani. He congratulates Jewish community worldwide with their religious new year; he writes a letter to the people of America in The Washington Post; announces that the solitary Jewish MP that Iranian parliament has will join him to New York and announce a meeting with the French president in New York. It comes to surprise too many how fast the new post-Ahmadinejad repertoire of the Islamic Republic is appeared and the flexibility of this theological based regime in its politics. I think that taking to account that an important kernel characteristic of Shia clergy - who are the architects of Islamic Republic – is that they operate bipolar at their top will help us to understand the elasticity of the Islamic Regime, comparing to the other Middle East regime how are based on military originated hierarchy – like Syria of Assad or Iraq of Saddam) or a (tribal based) kingdom, like Saudi-Arabia. Within Shia Clergy there is legitimate multiplicity of leaders and ideas within the framework of Shia clergy. In other words, there is a limited and framed diversity. A defined market situation with highest Ayatollahs as the only legitimate sellers, indeed. Ayatollah’s understand the power of limited diversity among themselves and understand the theatre aspects of politics and also that with some controlled tragedy – any victory is pregnant of a misery – within their system, both momentum winners and losers can goes on being the elite of a very exclusive system. Ahmadinejad and Rouhani are very different types and their era will be different, but they do belong to same system and have a faith in it.
