IRELE WAS AGOG AT SHEBA’S CALL The timeless axiom those whose palm-kernels were cracked for the by a benevolent spirit should not forget to be humble came to play again on Saturday July 20, 2013 at Ode-Irele as Honourable Abayomi Sheba, the Senatorial Aspirant of the Ondo Southern Senatorial District was on call, as usual, to interact with and extend philanthropic gesture to his people. The Town went agog and, seeing how he was received, one might wonder if he was a Senator already as people from all walks of life trooped out en masse to welcome and exchange pleasantries with him. News about his arrival spread like an inferno during the harmattan probably because the visit was on the special market day fondly called Congress week (Ose Ipade). Decked in an elegant simple-styled white lace which enabled him move unencumbered, the Honourable honourably alighted from his car, identified with and warmly thanked his people for the honour bestowed on him. He paid courtesy visit to a number of eminent personalities. Indeed, his visit to Irele and the opinion poll across the Six Local Government Areas of the District show he is the people’s choice. When playing host to a group of youth at his residence, Honourable Sheba reiterated his commitment to serve in the interest of the less privileged in all his political engagements and equally advised all beneficiaries of his benevolence to reciprocate the same generous gesture to other people. It is lucid that the transformation of the District in line with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Nigeria’s Vision 2020 is his primary concern. On a rather sad note, it dawned on everyone present that the Southern Senatorial District had suffered poor representation for considerable years especially at the National Assembly. In a mood I discerned to be Christ-like, Honourable Sheba felt pity for the youths because they had suffered extreme neglect. His mood made me quickly have a reminiscence of the crowd Jesus described as ‘Sheep without a shepherd’. As the account unfolded gradually in my mind, I realised that the Jews (that is the Israelites) had the Pharisees and the Sadducees as their leaders, yet Jesus said they were Sheep without a Shepherd. What did the Pharisees and Sadducees lack if not integrity, credibility, sensibleness and cognation? Rather than alleviating the plights of the people, they added to them, making the masses impoverished the more. Is the present situation not similar to the Jews? Happily, God raised a messiah in place of the Sadducees and Pharisees to salvage the situation. Also, in our midst, Abayomi Sheba has been raised to ameliorate the situation of things in the Ondo Southern Senatorial District. He has the aptitude needed to correct all incongruities. ────Iwabi Modahunsi 08076855244
