" IS RICE HEALTHY ? " Is rice healthy for me? Does eating rice lead to weight gain? And should I stop eating rice in order to lose my weight? These are the questions that I get to answer daily. While many “so called” fitness experts and regular run-on-the mill dietitians advice you to avoid rice like a plague, you may be receiving the wrath of your parents/grandparents for not eating them. So, what are the facts? Should you be eating them or not? The fact is.... it depends....! Rice is either healthy or unhealthy depending on several factors. It depends on which rice you buy, how you cook and serve it and how much you eat. The problem is most people use refined white rice. And that’s not healthy. This is because during the refining process most nutrients are removed. Refining rice strips them off their vitamins, minerals, fiber and essential fatty acids, leaving only insulin/blood sugar spiking starch. This nutrient depleted, low fiber, high starch refined white rice leads to • Obesity • Type 2 diabetes • Insulin resistance • Stroke and Heart disease The healthy option is to eat whole grain Red/Brown rice which is much higher in fiber, good fats, vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. The nutrients from this healthy rice are slowly absorbed into your bloodstream without causing a high insulin/blood sugar spike. Numerous studies also show that they help lower cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure naturally, which helps prevent heart disease. Well-documented research published in the American journal of Clinical Nutrition shows that people who eat high fiber foods like whole grain red/brown rice, weigh less than those who eat refined breads and white rice. So, choose high fiber whole grain red/brown rice over refined white rice and enjoy the path to good health and weight loss….!
