ISIS is clearly a barbaric regime. Its claim to Iraqi Territory and its attacks on Iraqi civilians warrant a response. However the primary purpose of the Iraqi government must be to defend Iraqi territory and Iraqi civilians. If it cant do that then it is a pointless institution. There are calls for Australia and the US to take the fight to ISIS in Iraq. Perhaps we should rent out our military services for a fee. Maybe we should donate it. But what we dont hear enough of is the responsibility of the Iraqi government to take on this challenge. We have violence problems in our own region. For example violent and superstitions thugs in Papua New Guinea. We dont need to sign up for every global conflict. ISIS may have some global reach and we should coordinate our efforts with other nations but Australia is in my view too hawkish on this new Iraq campaign. We should liberate our laws and allow those with concerns go and help the Iraqi government as mercenaries or donors. And if we do donate the air services of our military for free we should remind the Iraqi government of the discount they are being given.
