ISLAMIC STATE: The United States attempted a rescue of American hostages held by militants from Islamic State (formerly ISIS/ISIL) in Syria, according to a statement issued by the Department of Defence. The Pentagon’s press secretary, Rear Admiral Kirby, said that the mission was targeted at a specific group of captors and involved air and ground forces but unsuccessful because the hostages were not at the location. In a separate statement, The White House confirmed that the rescue attempt was made earlier this summer.
