IT IS FINISHED Hebrews 2:10 For it was fitting that He, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. I have always found this passage of scripture so interesting. At first glance, it may almost seem blasphemous, but as you take a closer look, it reveals a striking truth that can bring comfort and understanding to us. In chapter 2, the writer of Hebrews is explaining how Jesus is the founder of our salvation. He is warning people not to be confused by the false doctrine that was being circulated about “other ways” to be saved. In this verse, he explains that Jesus, who is called the founder of our salvation, was made perfect through suffering. Now that is a tremendous statement. While we don’t have time to dive into the depth of that statement theologically, what they are saying is Jesus’ life was perfected through the suffering that He endured. The Greek word for “perfect” is teleioō. It means “to carry through completely, to accomplish, finish, bring to an end.” Now, was Jesus perfect? YES! That’s not in question here. Rather, His obedience to carry out the mission that was given Him by the Father was finished and carried out completely … catch this … through suffering! I’m sure most of us don’t want to hear that suffering has a place in fulfilling our destinies. However, the scripture reminds us that it does. Suffering refines us to draw attention to the impurities that still cling to our thoughts and emotions. Why? So we can acknowledge them, and then allow the Father to set us free from them. No other mirror so plainly brings our fears and weaknesses into view like suffering. Ask Jesus, the One who suffered greatly so that the Father could be glorified and we could be restored. Let’s not think we’re exempt from suffering. 1 Peter 2:19 says, “For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly.” Suffering, while not pleasant, is an empowering thing, an honoring thing and a completing thing. So don’t run from God in anger or confusion in the midst of suffering; be aware of Him and run to Him. The completion of your obedience lies on the other side it. Let your light shine!
