IT PAYS TO BE HUMBLE I once read the story of Booker T. Washington, a renowned black educator in America. Shortly after he took over the presidency of Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, he was walking in an exclusive section of town when he was stopped by a wealthy white woman. Not knowing the famous Mr. Washington by sight, she asked if he would like to earn a few dollars by chopping wood for her. Because he had no pressing business at the moment, Professor Washington smiled, rolled up his sleeves, and proceeded to do the humble chore she had requested. When he was finished, he carried the logs into the house and stacked them by the fireplace. A little girl recognized him and later revealed his identity to the lady. The next morning the embarrassed woman went to see Mr. Washington in his office at the Institute and apologized profusely. Its perfectly all right, Madam, he replied. Occasionally I enjoy a little manual labor. Besides, its always a delight to do something for a friend. She shook his hand warmly and assured him that his meek and gracious attitude had endeared him and his work to her heart. Not long afterward she showed her admiration by persuading some wealthy acquaintances to join her in donating thousands of dollars to the Tuskegee Institute. How humble are you? That is still one of the greatest virtue we should see in a child of God. Jesus was and is our greatest model of humility. In Philippians 2:6-8, the scripture says, “who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.” And for every act and life of humility there is always a reward. So, verse 9-11 says, “Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Humility takes nothing away from you because you are always who you are. It does not reduce you from the status God has placed you. So why do you boast? Why do you tell everyone who you are or worst still present what you are not to the world so they will respect you? When you choose the path of humility, your greatness knows no limit. Once you choose the path of pride, God makes it a special assignment for himself to deliberately humiliate you. So, friends, let’s be humble!
