ITS MOVIE MONDAY!! MOVIE #4: Raiders of the Lost Ark. It was supposed to take 89 days. On a break from Close Encounters, Steven Spielberg met up with George Lucas in Hawaii. Lucas was nervous about his new film Star Wars opening and just wanted to get away. While walking on the beach, Spielberg mentioned that he still would like to direct a Bond movie. Ive got something better. Lucas replied. He told him his idea for Indiana Smith, an adventurer looking for the Ark of the Covenant that would harken back to the days of the old movie serials. This had stunts, cliff-hangers and Nazis, basically an old-fashioned adventure movie. O.K. Im in. said Spielberg. The hired a writer and hashed out the story in three days. When Paramount became the only studio interested, they wanted some kind of game plan. Lucas replied Trust me. Well the studio head didnt like that answer and tried to recruit some former co-writers of Lucas aquaintance to make George Be reasonable. They replied You blew it, George just wants to be trusted. So the studio head called him back and with a nervous stomach told him: Go ahead George, i trust you, make your movie. He then added later, Once i said i trust you, it was the most professionally produced movie id ever seen. For 20 million dollars and only 77 days shooting, it became the highest grossing movie of 1981. And i almost missed it. I was coming out of class one day and the person i was with suggested a movie. I wanted to see Clash of the Titans. Raiders was playing sooner so thats what we saw. Another John Williams spectacular music performance that everyone recognizes (he shows up a lot on my top ten list.), some creative directing by Spielberg(read online how the swordsman scene came about), and some stunt work that may never be topped. If this movie doesnt make you want to have an adventure of your own, you aint watchin it right. FAVORITE MOVIE MOMENT: When Indy and Marion are in the Well of the Souls, surrounded by 7000 SNAKES(thats what the production company procured) ,Indy gets an idea to crash through a wall by tipping a statue. The camera looks straight down at Marion as she screams INDYYY . . .THE TORCH IS GOING OUT!! Doesnt matter how many times i see it, i want to jump into the screen and save her. The best movies make you want to be a part of their world, dont they?
