Ian Charleson Award 2012 won by Ashley Zhangazha Ashley Zhangazha has received this year’s Ian Charleson Award, which is given for an outstanding performance in a classical role by an actor under the age of 30. He was singled out for his appearance as Ross in Macbeth at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, which ran in the autumn. Zhangazha was presented with the £5,000 prize by Adrian Lester during a ceremony held at the National Theatre. Amy Morgan took second place for her role as Margery Pinchwife in The Country Wife at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester and received £2,000. Lara Rossi’s performance as Dol Common in The Alchemist at the Liverpool Playhouse earned her third place and a prize of £500. Meanwhile, Vanessa Kirby received a special commendation for her appearance as Masha in Three Sisters at London’s Young Vic. This year’s judging panel included director Michael Grandage, actor Geraldine James, theatre critic John Peter and the National’s head of casting Wendy Spon. The awards are run by the National Theatre and The Sunday Times to commemorate and celebrate the life of stage and film actor Ian Charleson.
