Ibn al-Nafis and the commentary of the blood circulatory system. In 13th century Syria, Ibn al-Nafis accurately described the pulmonary circulatory system. He explained the role of the heart and that air was oxygenated in the lungs. He correctly explained the movement of blood. He stated blood moved from one chamber of the heart to the lungs and then back to a different chamber of the heart. These observations would not be known in Europe until 300 years later when Ibn al-Nafiss writings were translated into Latin. In 1628, Sir William Harvey would be credited with the discouvery of circulation. It was not until 1957,700 years after his death, that Ibn al-Nafis was credited with the discovery of pulmonary circulation.
