Id like to reiterate that I moderate comments, and wont tolerate comments I deem to be racist/attempting to excuse the murder of Black people. Even if we hadn’t talked about racism before, I wouldn’t be surprising my children with the news that people notice skin color, and that what they think when they notice matters quite a bit. There is plenty of research suggesting that children notice race early and that, given the opportunity, they tend to choose friends who look like them. They even draw conclusions about the fact that every president they have learned about is white until now — and they don’t necessarily go ask parents about that. If we’re not talking with our children about how race affects a person’s life in the United States and how racism factors into that, we’re not convincing children that skin color doesn’t matter. We’re telling them to figure it out themselves.
