Id like to share a message/review, which I hope will move you as you read it. In light of current events, I hope this readers words touch your heart as it did mine. My emotions swelled up as I read Ghost of Johanna. This book explained my family’s past. The similarity gave me shivers down my spine, as the girls explained the hardships of coming to America. My family also crossed through many troubles, rivers, jungles, and trains just to come to America, a country where they barely knew the language or how to even communicate with someone of a different race. Knowing what I know now at the age of nineteen, it makes me sad just to see how a simple book can explain so much about another country that you have never been to. It makes my view of our so called world seem a shame. How would we live in a world with no freedom and everything we have could be taken from us at a moment’s notice. Living a life that can’t really be called living is blasphemy. People don’t understand the hardships one goes through in these countries that struggle with a shortage of food, limited money, and no schools or hospitals for their family or children. Yet people from America say, Send them back to where they came from!” or ”They are taking all our money!” It sickens me how the world can be so cruel to one another. Everything I read from the book made me realize, even the very young have to struggle to be brave and go through the worst life they could possibly imagine in a poor country or a autocratic government. My thoughts and opinions changed, I just could not believe what I read was happening. My thoughts of El Salvador were of peace and tranquility, but to read all of this, made me realize that I should be more grateful for what I have. Personally, it makes me worry about my future, and what may become of my family and children if this country goes down the toilet. This opens my eyes to many things that pertain to other countries, and it makes me worry what my life would be like if I was there and these events were happening to me. There are many problems in the world, some of which we can fix but choose not to, some that can be made right, but we turn the other cheek just to keep ourselves safe. Many matters have been brought to light because of this book, many that need to be risen up and shown to the world. Books were not my strongest point in life, I hated reading with a passion, yet I read just to learn. Until I came into contact with this book, Something about it changed my thoughts on how I see books. Within the first two pages I was caught, all the way until the very end, where I cried for the girls. This was the first and only book that made me cry, and I APPLAUD it. I never really understood why reading was a necessity, it always seemed like a huge hassle to me, or maybe it was because I could never find a book that caught my attention and engaged me into reading it more. Yet this book, this book was different. It made me want to read more and more just so I could see if it had a happy ending. The book was well written, and well thought out; with many dramatic moments, and the switching from person to person as you read was genius. I would love to see more literature like this in the future from the same author, Susan K. Earl. Another great thing about this book, Ghost of Johanna, was that it had a Spanish side also, so my mother and father can read it. Its an AMAZING book, with great details, and an outstanding hook for readers to get caught up in. ~B. Hernandez Id love to hear reactions from of all my readers...
