Id like to share my thoughts from my experience yesterday during Lt. Walshs wake yesterday. Waiting for all the firefighters to arrive, I sat and watched car after car pour into the parking lot. There is support from thousands of firefighter from the surrounding areas whenever a man has fallen. Yesterday there were 2,000 from New York alone! The most moving to me is that most of those firefighters didnt personally know the fallen. There is most definitely a huge difference between a firefighter and bus driver. We dont go into burning buildings and save people, nevertheless, we put the safety of others in our hands, behind the wheel that is. I could write a book on the struggles we face every day, not only from the public but pressure from our own management. Why is it when someone passes or gets injured on the job here at the MBTA, we dont come together and help those who believe in us as a union? Yes we do for some, but not for all. We are not a union. There is not consistency with those injured or passed. Why do the ones who take action in getting a collection together, not take the same action for EVERY individual hurt or passed? That is not a union, that is being selective with who you choose to support. For those who have ever started a collection for support or believe in helping others, we look to you when there is someone in need. What are your thoughts Bennett Street? Tag anyone who has an opinion on this matter.
