Ideas Worth Sharing #6 Julie W Years ago I had a holiday with my friend and her 2 year old daughter, Em. I asked if they’d like to spend some time at my parent’s farm and she said “that’d be a good experience.” I was not a parent at this point (a DINK actually- double income no children). I am forever grateful for the week we had together because I learnt more than I could have imagined! My friend showed me what came naturally to her …..‘positive and child centred’ parenting. Most of what we did was focussed on showing things to “Em”, explaining details and building her vocabulary. Even when my friend was tired she found the energy to continue because “that’d be a good experience for Em.” We joined Dad in his bean patch, pushed pumpkins in an old pram, paddled in the creek, wandered around my grandmother’s house, watched wood being chopped, patted the horse, sat on the tractor, read my old books , sang songs and lots more because “that’d be a good experience for Em”. I was amazed with how content Em was, how well she listened and how well she talked. I could see so clearly why this was the case!!! So………….. sharing with positive and child centred parents is a real treat! Playgroup is a good way to support each other as parents……and we hope this website helps share some good tips too! “That’d be a good experience” … ideas in the Gympie Region Fly a kite Watch a Wedding Go fishing Use a boogie board at the beach Run on the slopes at Carlo Sand blow Collect grandma from the airport Visit a Farm Go on a picnic Grow vegetables Cook a cake Listen to a concert in the park Go to the markets Watch an excavator working Remember to explain details and build vocabulary in a positive, fun way. It doesn’t have to cost money. .... I am proud to have watched Em grow up …….She is now a successful Journalist. (A well -developed vocabulary is an indicator for later academic success) What are other good experiences you can recommend for parents of young children?
