Identity Theft Key to Cell Phone Crime Ring: Identity theft appears to have assisted a crime ring in defrauding cell phone providers out of thousands of cell phones that were later hacked and then sold in overseas markets. A federal lawsuit filed in September alleges stolen identities were used by individuals to sign new two-year cell phone service contracts or add lines to an established customer account in order to receive new phones from AT&T®, Verizon Wireless®, Best Buy®, Radio Shack® and Apple®.
