If I could sum up what I know, it would look like this: 29 BITS O PHOTOGRAPHY BUSINESS ADVICE Be proud of what you do. Strive to do it better. Do not take shortcuts-they get you nowhere…FAST. (unless it’s a shortcut to the bakery, in which case, take it every time) Run your business like a business. Everyone has something to sell you but few things actually make you better. Always do more than paid for. Be accessible and flexible. Laugh as much as possible. Don’t nickel and dime. Give clients value. Learn how to sell. Acknowledge trends but stay true to who you are. Charge what your product is worth. In business, as in Life, say “yes” as much as possible. Make your business about your clients, not yourself. Only feel guilty if you settle. Be aware of your competition but don’t be ruled by them. Editing with a glass of wine is better than editing without one. Realize that even the best job in the world will have challenges. Work smart AND hard. Strive for Perspective instead of Balance. Beware of business coaches who try to pit new photographers against experienced photographers in an effort to sell their services. Sometimes it’s your fault; sometimes it’s the clients fault, but either way, it’s up to YOU to solve the problem. Never stop learning. Realize that most problems can be solved with Common Sense. Don’t wait for that thing to happen before you can be happy. Be happy now. Dont dismiss the voice of Experience. Hold firm to the belief that our best days in this industry are NOT behind us. And last but certainly not least…know for a fact, all the way down to your soul, that selling a print is not the same thing as selling paper. xoxo
