If anyone wants to read a long ass message, please go ahead. Its a private message to a producer and Pro Tools engineer, a mentor of mine, what Id like to be doing 5 years from now. If you dont wanna read it, cool. Just wanted to update my friends. Dude thats awesome that someone takes time out of their busy day and gives you invaluable insight. Or should I say valuable? Lol. Anyway, it sounds like you and I are actually somewhat similar in that regard, having a place to sleep... comfortably rather than struggle like an orphan just to have a chance to write music for Flo Rida, which would be pretty sweet actually. Like Ive stated before, Im 32, and from guessing your experience I would say youre about 42? Maybe your a lot younger, but you certainly sound a lot wiser than anyone in their 30s, especially 20s! My goals are simple, yet very complicated. Its frustrating every day, a blessing with a curse, and hard to balance sometimes. Ive been running around since I was 18 and out of high school chasing that dream of being a famous drummer. I moved all over, Minneapolis, and even L.A. for 2 years. Recorded with bands, played just a few shows in CA, but have played hundreds here in the bars in WI. I got smoke blown up my arse more than a few times, got screwed over by bands, left bands in the dust that wanted me to be their drummer, so maybe I screwed them, but hey, we go with our guts and whats best for ourselves right? Adrian Young of No Doubt actually filled in for me for a show at the Viper Room, because the band I was with vetod me out, due to my carpal tunnel problems, but it wasnt my damn choice, it was theirs. Still somewhat bitter... grrr haha. Nonetheless, Ive learned so much, and by the time I was 27 living back in WI, I decided to go solo. Almost went to school at IPR in Minneapolis, but then decided to just do it myself and bout my first PT rig. Ive come a long way in the studio, on my own, learning from mentors like yourself online at the DUC, and YouTube videos galore. I work road construction during the day, and DJ for weddings and bars on the weekends. I have 18 weddings booked for next year already, so its safe to say thats a successful endeavor. I have about 70 drum covers on the Tube, write my own music, sing, and have a side project called Redneck Road Crew: thats where my recording comes into play the most. Were a local hit here, and 3 songs made the hit/pop radio station in Central WI, and all got voted to jam and play again. So, I do have a ton of experience, just in so many ways. But then again, I dont know [bleep][bleep][bleep][bleep] compared to some people, and thats where I want to keep poking around. Youre right, about the ego thing, and yes I agree its the best thing to hear. I know theres someone that is way better than me at all of it, but thats what makes me want to work harder. My living scenario, a small small town with little to no musicians, especially recording studios. So here, Im the big fish in a raindrop size pond. Ive done a few jingles for commercials, am the local DJ hero, and everyone here treats me damn good. Also very close with my family. To be honest, I dont want to move back to LA, not unless I had a job doing something with music, but even then I doubt it would be enough to pay the bills. Tell me, how does someone like Calvin Harris make 48 million in a year making beats, when I believe mine are better? Of course thats my opinion but thats how it goes. So thats that. Youre advice is to keep hammering what you accel at, and I think thats awesome. I think very highly of you, based on our short conversations, and youre giving the best advice Ive ever gotten, because youre doing what I want to do. Thanks so much Steve, and I hope to hear from you again. Any more advice would be awesome, and very inspiring! -Justin __________________ Mac Mini OS X 10.8.5 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 Pro Tools 10, 003 Rack, NI Maschine youtube/firsty33
