If my generation (~retirement target 2045) and those of our children (retirement target 2075) doesnt wake up and take personal responsibility for our financial future this trend will be the new norm for our middle class. Dont rely on social security, set aside money for your 401k/IRA every month starting from the first paycheck you earn...and if you have even a basic ability to paint walls and comprehend a lease I am HIGHLY pro-rental real estate. It is a steady, honest income that is paid monthly...there are great tax advantages...it isnt linked to the stock market or common fear in the market...and its something a commoner like us can control daily. I just moved into a self-directed IRA (rolled over my 401K) and now have two rentals in my retirement account tax-deferred. There is no reason anyone cant own a rental property.
