If one proposes some alternative to the *status quo*, one is often challenged to prove that it is possible, or even that there is a strategy which will guarantee its successful realization; especially if it has a utopian ring to it. I think that this is unreasonable. Suppose that a path open to us has only a one in a hundred chance of success, but that if it does succeed, it will bring an end to the horrible situation we are in, with its wars, plagues, famines, oppression, crime, poverty, general waste, and significant risk of human extinction. If the only alternative is to go on as we have been, then it seems to me to be quite rational to make the attempt. A dying species may clutch at straws. I might say the same for one in a thousand, or one in a million.
