If our society genuinely wished to eliminate poverty, we could do so literally overnight. The problem seems to be that we dont really wish to eliminate it, because were grounded in an assumption that the poor deserve to be poor. The notion of gifting the poor much of anything apparently goes against our collective moral code, because we feel nobody gave us that much, so why should the poor get a free ride? We keep telling ourselves that everyone has to earn the right to exist. What shifted for me was a deep and powerful realization that the gift of LIFE is the ultimate free ride. I did not a damn thing to deserve or earn it; Im here by grace, and by grace alone. So I spend much of my waking life returning the favor life has granted me in the form of my personal existence, by supporting and nurturing life wherever I observe it struggling, or striving, or suffering. Least I feel I can do in exchange for the miracle that is MY life.
