If people want to understand *why* groups like ISIS are so popular - TopicsExpress

If people want to understand *why* groups like ISIS are so popular amongst a certain segment of society, todays massacre by Shiite militants of at least 65 Sunnis who were praying in a mosque helps explain part of the reason: cnn/2014/08/22/world/meast/iraq-violence/index.html These Sunnis were viciously murdered as they prostrated in a masjid in front of their Lord. Violence begets violence. When people see their loved ones brutally murdered, their country invaded, their civil society collapsed, internal law and order crumbled, government leaders obeying foreign powers, personal property being taken at will, and no hope of substantive change, these people will slowly but surely turn to more extremist avenues. Desperate times breed desperate solutions (whether these solutions are legitimate or not is another issue altogether). It takes a lot of wisdom and courage, and a sound grounding in Islamic knowledge, to understand that responding to such bloodshed by wreaking more bloodshed on a new batch of innocents will only make matters much worse in the long run. Forget the fact that it is un-Islamic; its also downright foolish and counterproductive. Yet, the question that people need to ask is: imagine if your own brother or sister were blown up or killed by another group, and you were always hearing of more such stories, amongst your extended families and friends. What would you do? For how long could you continue to argue a peaceful solution? When would your breaking point come? At what point would you simply give up any other reasonable alternative, and just grab a Kalashnikov and quite literally jump on ISISs bandwagon? Note that this comment is in no way, shape or form intending to support the policies of ISIS (and my previous post clearly shows my stance towards them); rather, it merely is attempting to explain why some people would choose its radical path over other paths. Truly, we live in times of fitnah. May Allah guide us all to say and do that which pleases Him, without fearing the critics of the critic!
