"If the article was posted on Facebook with no disclaimer, only 10% of readers checked to see whether it was a news site or a satire site. If the word, “SATIRE” was placed very clearly before the headline and with capital letters, that number rose to 33%, but 67% of readers still believed the article was factual. The findings crossed all age groups, races, genders and political persuasions, although reactions differed. Liberals and Democrats were most likely to express righteous outrage at the stupid statements or actions while conservatives and Republicans were likely to applaud them. All non-critical thinkers were prone to defensive behavior when the fact that an article was satire was pointed out to them. The most common reaction was, “well, it might as well be true.” 28% of the fooled group unfriended the people who informed them of their error. Less than 1% of readers said they would be more careful next time."
