If the teacher of the child who is learning to play the violin - TopicsExpress

If the teacher of the child who is learning to play the violin reacts too intensely to a note out of tune or a missed shift, it might take years of re-education to get rid of the anxiety that accompanies intonation and shifting. If the young child does not have the freedom to make mistakes while experimenting with ways to play, he/she will learn to hold the breath in anticipation of failure and disapproval, and will not dare to try new things. This is a quote from master Feldenkrais trainer and practitioner (and former concert pianist) Aliza Stewart. Her above quote is exactly what happened to me personally (in this case with the home teachers). Her wisdom in applying movement to music has profoundly enriched my violin playing and the way I interact with students. Aliza is based in Baltimore and NYC, but does workshops with musicians and teachers all over the world, and has summer residences at Marlboro and Yellow Barn. She has scheduled workshops in Berlin, Vienna and Israel this summer and for those in or near Atlanta, a full-day workshop in Atlanta on 2/28/15. For those with a center of teachers, or a school, I highly recommend trying to snag a workshop with her for your teachers and/or Suzuki parents. What better time to introduce our young musicians to the bodily freedom in good playing than in their Suzuki beginners? Alizas work beautifully complements what we do, so that we can better nurture the beautiful souls in our care.
