If the video works, you will see Andante six months ago, having first had a rider on his back in January 2014. This is the first time I asked him to tolt. In the six months since the video was taken we have been hacking out, mostly in walk; occasional tolt, and two or three short canters. The aim was to get him stronger and more balanced, without working him too hard - and I dont think we have been back in the school since that day. He is a trail horse, so Im not after a Rio dressage prospect; but I want to start to teach him to use his body better. He is not particularly well balanced yet, and tends to try and drag himself around by his front legs when I ask him for an upward transition. His tolt is getting better now, especially on a slight downhill, where he has to get his hind legs under himself. I am thinking that his first schooling lessons should be rein back, shoulder in and leg yield. What would you do? Also - top tips for how to teach him these? ( I was going to start from the ground.) He is very calm and generally willing but can plant his feet if hes not happy with what is being asked. If the video doesnt work, same question!! And Ill try again to post it. I also know that my riding is far from perfect - but (kindly put) tips on that also welcome.
