If theres one thing thats apparent when someone we know (or know) - TopicsExpress

If theres one thing thats apparent when someone we know (or know) takes their own life its this: mental illness is common. Do we wish people would make a different choice? Be able to see beyond the darkness theyre in to know that suicide wont end, but just transfer that pain? Of course we do. Life is a beautiful gift. But life can also be extremely painful - for all of us. I wish we lived in a world where it was ok to just be. Wherever you are, pain or joy, sorrow or sanctuary. But in a land of only posting the good status updates, or putting a filter on our lives, its not okay to be not okay. We all have darkness. I have a temper that sometimes feels completely out of my control. Ive been in therapy (not lately, although maybe I should). I eat my feelings. I lash out at the people I love most. I struggle daily with making sure to not hate myself. And I lose that battle often. These may seem trivial in light of someone taking his own life. But Im tired being part of a society that pretends mental illness isnt EVERYWHERE. We often hear about de-stigmatizing mental illness. Ive said those words myself. So here it is. Here I am, in all my dysfunctional glory, making my way in this world. Can we please just start telling each other, and ourselves, that its okay to not be okay? To have compassion for what others are going through. And to keep a glimmer of hope that there is good in everyone, if only we would all let each other in? Be vulnerable (as I have tried to do here)?
