If under extreme provocation I will admit to a weakness for this Christmas carol, it still doesnt mean I will ever make peace with Jingle Bells in the supermarket, or anywhere else. But this song, beautifully titled Kom herwaarts, getroues in Afrikaans, is rousing stuff. I remember fondly how towards the end the sisters would sing one venite adoramus (kom buig saam in aanbidding), then the brothers one, and then the whole congregation together. It never failed to quicken my blood and make my heart leap. And this version by Spanish singers with Latin passion and suntanned children is a refreshment over the melanin-deficient, Kleenex-soft English roses one is more accustomed to — and that is only the men; women usually strictly verboten.
