If we are lucky, we might get an average of 75 Thanksgivings in a lifetime, 75 Christmas, Easters, etc. A potential 75 times that your entire family might all be in the same place at the same time, making lasting memories; and its not a funeral. In the end, how many of them will you remember? Probably all of them. Who you spent the big holidays with, who you didnt. The empty seats at the table. The newly filled ones as the younger marry and have children of their own. You will remember the years you spent the holidays alone in particular. The ones where loved ones were absent by death, by dispute, by distance or because their young have married and started their own lives, seemingly splitting your family apart as they recreate their own lives. In the end, you will remember these relatively few special occasions in your life probably more than anything else you experience. You can make the holidays about anything you like, but the bottom line is, they are about family. So the next time you decide to skip out on your family for the holidays, to spend with friends, strangers and other peoples families, remember, you only get about 75 of these things. Cherish your family.
