If you are attending a birth as a medical provider you have the ability to empower or undermine. It is a huge privilege and responsibility to be present at this sacred time. It never ceases to astound me that the entire labor and birth can change when the shift changes--we all bring our impressions with us...confidence or uncertainty...empowerment or fear...servant or authority..passion or apathy...understanding or impatience...we must choose because there is no neutrality. I obviously see this more at hospital births since there are not often shift changes at a home birth :) Did you have a supportive birth team?
