Speakers Mari-Lise du Preez: Conflict & cooperation in the Great Lakes – lessons from the Albertine Rift Mari-Lise will share some insights on regional cooperation in the Great Lakes, as seen through an environment and natural resources lens. Mari-Lise du Preez is Programme Manager of the Governance of Africa’s Resources Programme (GARP) at the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA). She has a Master’s Degree in International Studies from the University of Stellenbosch. Before joining SAIIA she lectured in International Politics at the University of South Africa. She has published several studies on the governance of the Congo Basin Forests – a block of tropical rainforest second in size only to the Amazon. Yvan Yenda: The public voice – the Media and its view on the Congo Yvan will present his findings on ‘negative reporting’ from Media and which implication it has for development engagement in the DRC. YvanYenda Ilunga is from the DRC and currently completing his Master in Social Development at UCT. His research interests include peace building, political economy of mining and regional integration in Africa. He has worked as researcher intern with the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (SA), consultant with First Step Initiative (Minnesota), visiting lecturer at the ‘Ecole de la bonne gouvernance economique et politique’ (DRC) and has occasionally lectured at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (New Jersey). Jamala Safari: Seeing the Congo through children’s eyes – the power of storytelling Jamala will introduce to us the power of storytelling and why it is important to talk about the Congo. Jamala Safari is a poet, novelist and author. His work has been featured at many artistic exhibitions and used for various campaigns. He was 1st prize winner of the 2010 Franschhoek Literary Festival. His novel “The Great Agony and Pure Laughter of the Gods” which tells a story of a child soldier in the DRC, has been shortlisted for the Citizen Book prize 2011 and for the 2013 Commonwealth Book Prize. He is currently studying towards his MBA through the University of Stellenbosch Business School.
