If you are joining us in reading through Isaiah Jeremiah, today’s reading is Isaiah chapter 41 and the devotion is taken from 41:8-10. ““But you, O Israel, my servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, you descendants of Abraham my friend, I took you from the ends of the earth, from its farthest corners I called you. I said, ‘You are my servant’; I have chosen you and have not rejected you. So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”” Who are you? Many people would answer that question by giving their name. And then they may follow up with telling the person what city are what state they come from. But some people have another way of looking at who they are and that is through their heritage. They may say something like: “I come from a long line of Baptist preachers or my family participated in the Oklahoma land rush.” If they can trace their heritage back to the Mayflower or the early Jamestown settlement they may even use that as their anchor point. But if you’re related to God through his son you have a different heritage. You’ve been chosen by him. You’ve been called by him. And therefore you are protected by him. Pastor Saeed Abedini, the American pastor in prison in Iran, wrote the following as part of an Easter letter: “On the Eve of Good Friday and Easter I was praying from my hospital room for my fellow Christians in the world. What the Holy Spirit revealed to me in prayer was that there are many dead faiths in the midst of Christians today. That Christians all over the world are not able to fully reach their spiritual potential that has been given to them as a gift by God so that in reaching that potential, the curtain can be removed and the Glory of God would be revealed. Sometimes we want to experience the Glory and resurrection with Jesus without experiencing death with Him. We do not realize that unless we pass through the path of death with Christ, we are not able to experience resurrection with Christ.” We have been chosen by God to bring the message of Christ to the world. Our greatest heritage, our greatest goal should be to be placed in a position where God can use us to his glory. It doesn’t matter whether you’re imprisoned for him or living in a mansion for him. What does matter is a living for him. He is our heritage.
