If you are joining us in reading through the Gospel of Matthew today’s reading is Matthew 13:10-23 and the devotion is taken from verses 18-23. “Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path. The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful. But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.” Northlake is currently building a community garden. And Jesus’ parable of the sower is very appropriate given that we are just preparing the fall crop and in January and February will fill the entire 4000 ft. with plants. We know that as we plant seed some of that seed is going to fall on ground that is hard and not prepared. While the seed may sprout it will have nothing to dig into as the earth is mainly clay and so either it will die or if it is on the edge of the garden weeds and grass may choke it out. Some of the seed will grow into a good plant but for some reason that part of the garden may need more attention than other parts and if we aren’t careful weeds will come up and choke the plant so that it does not produce what it needs to. Finally, some plants will yield many times the seed we planted and will help feed a number of people. We as Christians need to be the third kind of plant. And the way we do that is this: we must watch out for one another. If we see a brother or sister getting caught in the traps of life we need to pull them out and help them overcome that with which they struggle.
