If you are not feeling in a particularly festive or in a Christmas mood, may I recommend Until the Light takes us. This film follows the origins of Norwegian Black metal, and the related resistance church burning of the early 1990s. The music and life style was a response, reaction, and resistance to the colonizing culture, who had, over hundreds of years, wiped out what was left of native indigenous Norwegian, European, Pagan, and Viking history and replaced it with christian values and culture. It made me think about my European ethnicity and how the native European cultures were white washed into conformity by the deliminator culture. I find it troubling to want to relate to my European heritage and not knowing the life ways, customs and cultures of the peoples that birthed me. Instead I look to a history of colonization originating from roman conquest, and how they went country by country killing, assimilating, and destroying the culture which had been there. It makes me wonder what to identify with, and what my back ground is. Well, until the light takes us, merry Christmas!
