If you are seeing local law enforcement officials a little less - TopicsExpress

If you are seeing local law enforcement officials a little less clean cut, there is a good reason for it. The Hancock Countys Sheriffs Office, along with the Weirton and Chester Police Departments, are putting their razors down and joining the fight against cancer. Sheriff Ralph Fletcher says his officers approached him, asking permission to grow facial hair as part of a nationwide effort, called No-Shave November, to raise money for the American Cancer Society. When they explained it to me, that it was for a good cause and they also had a brother officer who was recently diagnosed with cancer, how could I say no?” Fletcher asked. “Besides that I’ve been making a statement with facial hair for a long time, so yes, go ahead and grow it. Fletcher says this is something officers are not permitted to do until retirement. After deputies asked for the sheriffs permission, they reached out to other local law enforcement agencies to join the movement. They called us and asked us if we wanted to be part of the No-Shave November,” Weirton Police Chief Rob Alexander said. “This department has not participated in anything like that. So we talked to the mayor and city council and they were all on board. Officers in the three departments are seeking sponsors to raise $100 or more each to donate to the American Cancer Society in honor of the retired Hancock County officer who was recently diagnosed with cancer. It hits home to a lot of officers, to a lot of our friends, our neighbors,” Fletcher said. “It’s there; it’s in everybody’s life and can be very scary and devastating, so it’s a good cause. It’s kind of odd,” Alexander said. “I went to a council meeting. Usually, I go shaved, then I went with this on my face and everyone was looking at me like what are you doing? Once you explain it its exciting for a good cause. Anyone interested in sponsoring an officer can contact the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, Weirton Police Department or Chester City Police Department. wtov9/shared/news/features/top-stories/stories/wtov_hancock-county-law-enforcement-joins-noshave-november-6457.shtml
