If you are thinking about entering Red Bull Romaniacs there are some things you need to know, then there are some things that might be good to know as well. Heres what I learnt. Depending on class it will be the most difficult thing you are ever likely to do, either on or off the bike. If you want a challenge but also a good race then enter Bronze class the first time. You cannot change class mid-race, contrary to the common view. If you enter Silver then be prepared for much pain. Not, oh my arm hurts, but full physical & mental hurt locker type pain. Pain that you may or may not recover from. Choose wisely While most racers get it will be physically tough, be prepared for it mentally as well, it is brutal. Make sure to give yourself a few days before the event to get over the 35 hour flight. Try to get up in the mountains, the altitude really does knock you a little bit. After the race, you can really leave the day after, this will save you cash on accommodation, If you do hang around hire a car and hit one of the attractions pretty close by. We drove up the Transfagarasan Highway, this was awesome. Most of the bike hire and service companies seem pretty well setup. I rode with Adrenaline Racing, I would use them again and there service was very good. Also the Victorian guys had an awesome service crew as well Top Cross. Might be good to know as sending money to a guy in Romania is a red flag to the banks for good reason. When you stay away from the main hotel in the city ( for 2 nights ) take enough food for dinner & breakfast. The food at these two locations is nothing short of rubbish. You need good nutrition. Tyres & Mousse combination is important for this event. Make sure it is very, very soft. Example run a 120 mousse in a 140 tyre. Softer the better. Bike setup, just make sure it is very well protected. Fan is a must. Good GPS mount is very important. Two Stroke, Two Stroke, Two Stroke....... not negotiable if you enter Silver class, in Bronze it still would be better to be on a two stroke but not as important as you can ride most of it where as in Silver you are guaranteed to be skull dragging it over and over, then picking it up, then putting it down..... you get the picture. Most places dont take Euro in Romania. Most of us got caught with a bunch of Euro we couldnt use. Just buy a sim card from Orange when you get to Sibiu. Give them your phone and let them make it work. For $20 you can get 1.5g data + all your calls etc for a couple of weeks. Face Book is awesome, use messenger etc to organize dinner, meeting points between all the Aussies. It is an awesome event and I am pretty sure Ill be back in 2016.
