If you arrive at a rehearsal or performance before he contracted start time, the music director, and your fellow musicians, will feel that you have allotted for enough time to prepare your instrument while allowing adequate time to warm. It is generally agreed that arriving early will lead to the best possible chance at executing a expressive, accurate, and rewarding performance. If you arrive at the exact moment that the performance is contracted to begin it is all but impossible to be prepared to present the above mentioned rewarding performance. Many music directors will hire musicians with the expectation that the performer will arrive early in order to prepare themselves for said performance. Indeed, it may not even be discussed, but rather assumed, that an employee will allow for this extra time before the contracted downbeat. In conclusion, in order to insure future employment with organizations that contract musicians, it is my recommendation that you arrive before the contracted start time.
