If you ever doubt the importance of shade trees to an populated area, take a look at two urban forests. On the top is the heartland of North Dallas from a high rise (US 75 just to my left and I635 just behind me). Photo taken two weeks ago. Photo on the bottom is from the Sul Ross University campus in beautiful (but arid) Alpine in the Big Bend Country of West Texas. I took this photo in May two years ago. If you saw the movie Boyhood, you saw this exact scene toward the end of the movie. My father founded the Biology Department at Sul Ross, and he looked across Alpine from this exact location in the parking lot for 17 years during the Great Depression. You just gotta love trees!
