If you have a spare 20 minutes watch the miracle of marsupial - TopicsExpress

If you have a spare 20 minutes watch the miracle of marsupial reproduction; birth, growth and development. In this instance that of the Red Kangaroo. A very short gestation followed by development in a pouch is unique to the marsupials. First is the birth of an undeveloped, basically embryonic joey. The jellybean-like joey is blind, hairless, has no ears or hind limbs but does have well developed forelimbs and sense of direction that allows it to climb into the pouch unaided. There it will attach to a teat and continue its growth and development, turning into the animal we will all eventually recognise. With thanks to CSIRO for this footage and information.
