If you havent raced a bike around Dookie in the spring then you still have a tick on your bucket list to go. Perfect conditions and golden canola crops greeted 11 riders (and a few individuals enjoying a training run) around the 52 km course on Sunday morning. Visiting Hume riders Geoff Morley, Ian Strang and Dave Wohlers joined the GV riders for the day. Old friends Jim Guthrie and John Trewin left together off 32 minutes with Don Mintern (enjoying his 75th birthday ) linking up with the returning Paul ODwyer and John Tielen 7 minutes later. Dave and another returning rider, Myles Higgins paired up after another 6 minutes, followed by the trio off block, Kev Laffy, Geoff and Ian with 16 minutes to bridge. Nev Laffy went off scratch in arrears. The slight breeze and warm air suited the front markers, and Jim and John set a steady pace, working well in tandem. Paul and Don worked hard with John Tielen, but his lack of recent training would see him lose touch into the final lap, still shy of the limit riders. Block had lost Ian into the second lap climbing up the college hill and he latched onto Neville working his way steadily to this group. Neville caught the block group on the bends in the last lap, and they began to work together to continue bridging the gap. Meanwhile Dave, setting himself for the Masters Games in Alice Springs in the next few weeks, and Myles, just returned from a 2500 km trek up the WA coast, were reeling both groups in ahead. Over the second last hill near the cemetery they hit the lead and would not be headed, with Dave just edging out Myles in a tight sprint. Jim Guthrie held on well taking third 90 secs in arrears, followed closely by Paul and Don. The group of block and scratch another minute back came in together with Kev Laffy edging Neville out for 6th. The cake and bikkies went down a treat. Next race, Sunday Aug 31- Kialla - Karramomus course. General meeting to follow.
