If you live in the Eastern time zone, it is now November 11, an official holiday currently known as Veterans Day. Before 1954 it was known as Armistice Day, in remembrance of the day when hostilities between Germany and the Allies ceased in 1918. According to Wikipedia, A Congressional Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U.S. Code, Sec. 87a) approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday: a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as Armistice Day. Now, of course, the day is never dedicated to the cause of world peace, but rather to its opposite, the glorification of all persons who have served in any capacity in the uniformed armed forces of the USA. In short, the day has been transformed from a solemn remembrance of the end of four years of senseless, horrendous slaughter to a day of celebrating our heroes regardless of their typically having served in violating the peace and conducting aggressive war, often by indefensible means that kill and wound more innocent by-standers than enemy fighters. George Orwell would not have been surprised by this development.
